RESUMO

RATIONALE: There is a paucity of empirical studies exploring how death and dying in old age are actually represented and debated within the Dutch society. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the discourse used in Dutch newspapers on the good death and dignified dying. It analyses how different types of social actions and positions are construed, thereby describing how death and dying in old age are portrayed in newspaper media. METHODS: 173 newspaper articles between 2010 and 2020 were selected from five Dutch national newspapers. Data were thematically coded and scrutinised for discursive patterns in order to identify interpretative repertoires and their functions. RESULTS: Four interpretative repertoires of good death and dying in old age were identified, all drawing on the assisted dying debate: Choice, Risk, Care, and Complexity. Each repertoire constructs a particular image of death and dying, varying from it being a personal choice; a last resort; a joint journey; to a contingent quest. The different repertoires imply distinct identities and actions. The Choice-repertoire construes older people as active subjects who autonomously determine their own death. The Risk- and Care-repertoires both construe older people primarily as passive and acted upon: either threatened by illness, decline and death; or protected and cared for by others and society. The Complexity-repertoire construes older people's situation as an object of reflection. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The strong prevalence of the Choice-repertoire in Dutch newspapers construes good death and dignified dying in old age in a salient way, unrepresentatively highlighting assisted dying as the preferred imagined practice. It is hypothesised that reimaging the Care- and Complexity-repertoires in such a way that they construe older persons in a more active subject role could help depolarise the debate on death and dying in old age.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This article aimed to analyse constructions of adolescents' sexualities and sexual health and the consequences of these discourses for adolescents' exercise of their sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in rural Zambia. METHODS: Interpretative repertoires, which is rooted in discursive psychology was used to analyse data from photo-elicitations interviews and focus group discussions. Our participants included 25 adolescents who participated in a SRHR intervention that aimed to reduce adolescents' pregnancies and early marriages. RESULTS: We identified three interpretative repertories: 1) sex is for mature people in which adolescents positioned themselves as 'immature, and young to engage in sex; 2) gendered respectful behaviours in which what was considered disrespectful (and respectful) behaviour in relation to sexuality were strongly influenced by gender, and more clearly defined for girls than it was for boys. Sexuality was not only about individual choices but about being respectful to parents; and 3) acquiring and using knowledge about sexuality in which adolescents conflicted between having and applying SRHR knowledge. CONCLUSION: These repertories offer an important context that shape how adolescents negotiate, adopt and resist SRHR interventions. Future interventions that target adolescents' SRHR must aim to address the sexual scripts that serve to erect barriers against positive sexual behaviours, including access to SRHR services that promote safer sex.

RESUMO

In many European Countries, a diagnosis is needed to access the gender transition process, which has sparked debate about whether gender variance should be equated with a psychodiagnosis. This study explores mental health practitioners' perspectives about the implications of using the diagnosis for gatekeeping purposes. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 Italian mental health specialists. The personal positions and interpretative repertoires emerging from the interviews centred on three thematic areas: the diagnosis, the practitioner's role, and the clinical relationship. In relation to the development of health promotion policies, findings underscore the importance of exercising reflexivity, adhering to theory and national and/or international guidelines, and analysing people's needs to ensure that the clinical setting is an affirmative space, especially for non-binary people.

RESUMO

In this paper, we analyse patients' perspectives on the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic systems in healthcare. Based on citizens' experiences when hospitalised for COVID-19, we explore how the opinions and concerns regarding healthcare automation could not be disassociated from a context of high pressure on the health system and lack of resources, and a political discourse on AI and robotics; a situation intensified by the pandemic. Thus, through the analysis of a set of interviews, a series of issues are identified that revolve around the following: the empirical effects of imagined robots, the vivid experience of citizens with the care crisis, the discomfort of the ineffective, the virtualised care assemblages, the human-based face-to-face relationships, and the automatisation of healthcare tasks. In light of these results, we show the variability in patients' perspectives on AI and robotic systems and explain it by distinguishing two interpretive repertoires that account for different views and opinions: a well-being repertoire and a responsibility repertoire. Both interpretative repertoires are relevant in order to grasp the complexity of citizens' approaches to automatisation of healthcare. Attending to both allows us to move beyond the dominant (political) discourse of technology markets as the only way to respond to healthcare challenges. Thus, we can analyse and integrate patients' perspectives to develop AI and robotic systems in healthcare to serve citizens' needs and collective well-being.

RESUMO

Health practitioners of the geriatrics ward in a teaching hospital participate in interprofessional team meetings to agree on treatment and discharge care plans for their patients suffering from chronic illnesses and co-morbidities and in need of coordinated assessments and care. We turn to the ideas in critical discursive psychology to grow a much-needed research area of examining the language-in-use and its effects in team decision-making. Specifically we explore how healthcare team members use language to perform collaboration or disengagement, creating different subject positionings for themselves and others out of a backcloth of discursive resources and practices. We observed and transcribed 108 case discussions and analyzed them for interpretative repertoires and discursive devices. During the first half of the team discussions, the members of various health professions employed the empiricist and lifeworld interpretative repertoires and the discursive strategy of perspective-taking, articulating these through formulations and questions. We use the notion of argumentative texture to better understand why an administrative structural support like protected turn-taking in team meetings is not enough to promote interprofessional collaboration. We conclude that health practitioners can improve their contributions and subject positionings at team meetings and consequently patient-care, by identifying habitually deployed linguistic resources depicting professional knowledge, and augmenting these with Other-oriented perspectives in their repertoires. By expanding their range of discursive repertoires and recognizing that discursive practices are embedded in the bigger context or argumentative texture of institutional and societal discourses, norms, values, beliefs and practices, interprofessional teams can work to improve communication and knowledge-sharing.

RESUMO

This article analyzes the Facebook page Justice for Mike Brown-set up during the 2014 Ferguson protests-in order to rethink the role of memory work within contemporary digital activism. We argue that, as a particular type of discursive practice, memory work on the page bridged personal and collective action frames. This occurred in four overlapping ways. First, the page allowed for affective commemorative engagement that helped shape Brown's public image. Second, Brown's death was contextualized as part of systematic injustice against African Americans. Third, the past was used to legitimize present action, wherein the present was continually connected to the past and future. And fourth, particular discursive units became recognizable symbolic markers during the protests and for future recall. Based on this typology, we show that memory work, although multidirectional and in flux, is stabilized by the interactions between the page administrator, users, and Facebook's operational logic.

The present study investigates, through discourse analysis, how the notions of school vulnerability and educational management have been established in the Chilean education legislation. The incorporation of these elements has implied a profound transformation on schools, where the accountability logic coexists with an equality of opportunities value. Based on the interpretative repertoires approach (Potter y Wetherell, 1987), we analyzed the functions that a vulnerable or "critical” student plays in the text corpus of the 20.248 Preferential School Subsidy law. This analysis yielded three kinds of interpretative repertories: a) Equally of Opportunities, b) Technical, and c) Management. Results are discussed in terms of the implications of the vulnerability concept, especially regarding the different logics available in a context of commercialization and education management policies.

The aim of the study was to illuminate interpretative repertoires that jointly construct the interaction between adult women who self-harm and professional caregivers in psychiatric inpatient care. Participant observations and informal interviews were conducted among six women who self-harm and their professional caregivers in two psychiatric inpatient wards, and analysed using the concept of interpretative repertoires from the discipline of discursive psychology. The analysis revealed four interpretative repertoires that jointly constructed the interaction. The professional caregivers used a "fostering repertoire" and a "supportive repertoire" and the women who self-harmed used a "victim repertoire" and an "expert repertoire." The women and the caregivers were positioned and positioned themselves and people around them within and among these interpretative repertoires to make sense of their experiences of the interaction. It was necessary to consider each woman's own life chances and knowledge about herself and her needs. The participants made it clear that it was essential for them to be met with respect as individuals. Professional caregivers need to work in partnership with individuals who self-harm-experts by profession collaborating with experts by experience. Caregivers need to look beyond behavioural symptoms and recognise each individual's possibilities for agency.

In this paper we explore how the meanings of life are produced in the moral controversy about induced abortion through the use of interpretative repertoires. The focus of this study was the injunction by the Marco Aurelio Mello, Minister of the Supreme Court, who in 2004 authorized the termination of pregnancy in cases of fetal anencephaly. Our discursive analysis was based on the description and interpretation of linguistic repertoires used for constructing arguments for and against approval of induced abortion in cases of pregnancy of an anencephalic fetus. The analysis of the documents indicates that the uses of language to refer to "pregnant women", "fetus" and "abortion" gives preeminence to religious values in the evaluation of reproductive rights which block the effectiveness of welfare policies for women's health.(AU)
